I know that’s not the answer you were looking for but let me explain and I’ll talk about specific weapons in a minute.
An attacker does not want a fight. They want to catch you at your weakest most unprepared moment so they can get what they want quickly and easily. They will do absolutely everything they can to catch you by surprise with no warning whatsoever.
- so a baseball bat in the other room is useless
- a gun in your glove-box is useless
- even a knife or pepper-spray that’s in your purse or pocket is useless at that moment
Don’t delude yourself with the idea that you will have time to draw a weapon or that you will be able to trick an attacker into letting you rummage through your purse. This might work against some attackers but others will just kill you and then take what they want and you won’t know which kind of attacker it is until it’s too late.
Now don’t start thinking that there is no best self defense weapon for women. There are many very effective tools that can be used against an attacker.
- A heavy purse is a good weapon
- A light purse can be a good distraction
- pens and pencils can be used almost like knives (think more stabbing that slashing)
- surroundings can be very effectively
- shove an attacker into traffic or down a flight of stairs
- There are many others but like these they all depend upon the where when how and why of the situation and every single situation is different.

The absolute best self defense weapon for women is: yourself.
You are the one single consistent factor in any situation you may be in.
Now, you do NOT need to become a martial artist. You don’t even need to train regularly for self defense. But you should be aware of a couple things.
First, awareness and avoidance are #1. Pay attention to your surroundings, plan ahead and don’t put yourself in bad situations.
Second, when it comes to a physical confrontation there are a lot of things that can be very useful unfortunately the more choices you have to make the worse it is for you. By the time you figure out which technique or tool or method is the right one it’s too late.
So if I had to choose just one thing as the best self defense weapon for women, I would choose this:
Learn to move with your entire body weight.
Here’s what I mean. Imagine if you took a crowbar, a sledgehammer, a bowling ball or a concrete block and hit someone with it. It doesn’t matter where you hit them, how you hit them or even how hard you hit them. It’s going to hurt and you’ll probably break something of there’s.
Now please don’t take this the wrong way but you probably weigh a lot more than a crowbar or a cinder block. So when you learn to move and hit with your whole body weight it doesn’t matter where you hit someone, how you hit someone or what you hit them with.
You can do a lot of damage to any attacker immediately with very little effort. You don’t have to remember any complicated techniques and you don’t have to try and draw a weapon or remember to carry one. You just reach out and smash or shatter the first thing on the attacker that you can reach … and then the second … and then the third … and so on until they are no longer a threat to you.
